Marketing & Promotions

Promotion methods

Today I did some research on Marketing and promoting methods for artists. Promoters get artists noticed by methods such as posters, billboards and mailing lists. However, a lot of promotors have taken advantage of social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblur, Instagram and My Space. Promotors use sites such as these to build on artist's personalities and brand. This is how many independent artists tend to start out. For example, Justin Bieber who was discovered on Youtube. Independent artists also turn to music and events in nightclub to promote themselves and it has proven successful. For example acts such as chipmunk, who started out promoting themselves in nightclubs. This research has been beneficial because when were promoting out artist, we need to be aware of promoting methods such as social networks.

Fiction Records

Fiction Records is a British label founded by Chris Parry in 1978 that is best known for being the home of The Cure for over 20 years. Formerly independent, the label is now owned by Polydor, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. Fiction records is a UK based label catering for the genre's in indie pop and alternative rock. This is the record company that produced Kate Nash's single 'Foundations'.

Polydor is also a UK based company having produced music for acts such as Cheryl Cole, Take That, Kaiser Chiefs and Ellie Golding and have also produced music for US artists such as Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and The Pussycat Dolls.

In January 2004 Joe Munns, Paul Smernicki and Jim Chancellor decided to revive Fiction to "give Polydor a bit more of a guitar stronghold", as their roster then consisted mostly of pop acts. The first release on the "new" Fiction was the Snow Patrol single "Run", which entered the UK chart at #5. The subsequent Snow Patrol album Final Straw has since gone on to sell over 2 million copies around the world.

The current Fiction stable includes Crystal Castles, Ian Brown, Snow Patrol, The Maccabees, Kate Nash, Athlete, Elbow, White Lies, Yuksek, Detroit Social Club, and Filthy Dukes. Fiction has also released records by Stephen Fretwell, Jacknife Lee, Delays, Alberta Cross, Guillemots and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Shooting Progress

We have done most of the shooting, including green screen and Narrative. The bedroom scene was one of my favourite shoots we took. We decided to experiment with an aerial shot from above the bed which you can see above looked really good. We kept the lighting simple, although we had to experiment with it because a lot of shadows were created; because of the extra lights that we were using. We had to take some of the shots several times to ensure that we had the right shot, although this was a long process, it was worthwhile when we achieved the right footage. After gaining all the footage needed we went about editing it in Final Cut and putting it together on a time line. We did this successfully as we had constructed a storyboard before and we could therefore follow it step by step.

Planning meeting 1 (initial response)

Today we were told our brief and we got started straight away. We decided as a group, from looking at previous work that slow songs are difficult to work with creatively, upon this conclusion we decided  that  our song choice should be something quite upbeat and have a message behind it; so that we could produce a strong narrative. After hours of flicking through songs on our ipods, we decided on Kate Nash's song 'Foundations'. This song is quite upbeat and we felt that we would enjoy editing it and making a narrative about it. We began planning and quickly came up with what we wanted to be in the music video and also what the narrative we would. The initial reaction from everyone toward the brief was excitement and we then went on to think about the cast.

We decided that we wanted the cast to be quite confident and feel comfortable in front of the camera. As the song is quite indie, we thad to think about who would suit the role well. Erna wanted to do it and we decided that it would be a good idea, as she is very confident and fits in well with the indie pop genre.

Planning for website

Today, we brainstormed some of the ideas that we wanted to include on our website. We thought about them carefully and added to the list as we went along.

Logos & Fonts

We played around with Fonts and thought about a brand identity and logo. The Fonts we decided upon as seen above had a simplicity and feminine feel to them. We also thought about a logo, so that we could apply it to all out merchandise.

Digi Pak Initial Ideas

These are some of my initial Digi Pak ideas, I wanted the image to be bold and catch the audiences attention by being aesthetically bright. I edited the image above and played around with the colours to see what i wanted to do.

Website initial ideas

We chose a simple layout for our website because we wanted our target audience to be able to navigate their way around the site with ease. Here are some of the drafted layouts we looked at and debated on, whilst we constructed our website. We had to keep in mind that our artist falls into the indie-pop genre, so the site had to reflect her personality.
